The not-so-sweet truth about sugar

www.uangsurga.com

Prima online

We know about sugar and weight gain, but what about its role in tiredness and ageing?

Woman with sugar on her lips

What do you eat in a typical day? Toast with jam and a cup of coffee for breakfast, tea and two digestives mid-morning, a sandwich and fruit juice at lunch, a mid-afternoon Kit-Kat, pasta and a fruit yoghurt for dinner? It sounds innocent enough but in fact, like most British women, in just one day you've eaten the equivalent of around 38 tablespoons of sugar.

While we all know that eating excess sugar causes tooth decay and piles on the pounds, a growing number of nutritionists and scientists now believe that the excess refined sugar in our everyday diets is causing us to lose sleep and even speeding up the ageing process. And worryingly it seems that the more sugar we eat, the more we want.

What happens when we eat sugar?

‘Our bodies need fuel for energy from carbohydrates,' says Professor Aubrey Sheiham, professor of dental public health at University College London, who has studied the effects of sugar on the body. Sugar - whether it's in chocolate, cakes, biscuits, fruit juices (which, if they're not 100% juice can contain as much sugar as a can of Coke) honey or maple syrup - is just one form known as a simple carbohydrate. But the body also gets fuel from complex carbohydrates, which come from natural plant foods such as fruit, vegetables, brown rice, wholemeal pasta and bread.

The difference, says Aubrey is in the way our bodies react to the two types. ‘If you eat an apple or a slice of wholemeal bread your energy levels go up slowly and come back down slowly,' says Aubrey. That's because your pancreas gradually releases small amounts of insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas to help regulate the bodies' fuel supply from glucose, and to take it out of the blood and into the cells for use as energy. ‘But when you eat a chocolate bar, your pancreas has to quickly release large amounts of insulin to process the sugar in your system. In time this leads to a rapid fall in blood sugar, yet more sugar cravings, irritability, exhaustion and crankiness as the fuel in your system quickly depletes, a process known as ‘reactive hypoglycaemia,' says Aubrey. ‘In fact, there is no evidence that our bodies have any physiological need for excess sugar.'

What sugar is doing to...

...your weight

For years, we've been told that it's mainly fat which makes us fat. But a recent study at Cambridge University's Medical Research Council found that each day, overweight people ate nearly three times as much sugar as their thinner counterparts. When self-confessed sugar junkie Connie Bennett, author of Sugar Shock! (Berkley, £10.33) gave up sugar ten years ago, her mood and energy levels improved dramatically. But there was another side effect - she lost weight. ‘I used to eat lots of boiled sweets and wine gums - up to 20 a day - along with liquorice and "low-fat" biscuits,' says Connie. ‘But they were low in calories so I never imagined they were making me fat. Within a month of cutting out all sugar, I'd lost seven pounds and dropped a dress size, without really trying'.

...your skin

In her new book The Beauty Diet (McGraw Hill £12.99) nutritionist Lisa Drayer points to a recent study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, in which researchers studied the diets of 453 adults living in different countries and found that those who consumed more fish, olive oil and legumes were less prone to wrinkles than those who ate more meat, butter, high fat dairy and sugar. In particular, processed meat, soft drinks and pastries were associated with more skin wrinkling, while beans, green leafy vegetables, asparagus, nuts, olives, apples and pears were associated with less skin ageing. ‘When you eat lots of sugar and refined carbohydrates such as white rice, bread and pasta, levels of blood sugar in the body remain high,' says Lisa.

As a result, sugar molecules permanently bond to proteins, including the collagen in the skin - a process known as glycation. This produces chemical compounds called Advanced Glycation Endproducts (AGEs) that bind with skin proteins to create a chemical reaction in the skin, making its surface more stiff and inflexible, leading to premature ageing. ‘When this occurs the strands of protein that support your skin no longer move freely, making tissues stiff and inflexible. This makes skin tougher, saggier and more wrinkled.'

...your sleep

Do you feel utterly exhausted at night and nod off quite easily, only to wake in the wee hours with a start? The sugar in your diet could be to blame, says Charlotte Watts, nutritionist on BBC Three's Freaky Eaters and founder of www.positivelyslim.com. If you consume lots of refined sugar and white carbohydrates, your energy levels develop a yo-yo pattern where you crash a few hours after eating and you crave more sugar. ‘When you go to sleep after eating a dinner of say white, refined pasta and a sweet pudding,' says Charlotte, ‘you get a sudden burst of comfort and fullness, but come the middle of the night, you awake because your blood sugar has quickly dropped and is craving another fix.' With the exception of meringue, if you halved the amount of sugar in every single recipe you made, it would still work

On the other hand, if you eat a diet low in refined sugar with plenty of wholemeal foods, fruits, vegetables, lean meats and nuts your body's fuel system is sustained throughout both the day and the night. The result? A better night's sleep. ‘You could also try a pre-bed snack of celery sticks with peanut butter,' suggests Charlotte. ‘Celery is a traditional sleep aid and peanut butter contains tryptophan which helps the body create serotonin, a natural feel good chemical in the body that helps promote calm and sleep.'

How to cut down on sugar (without being miserable!)

Take it slow It's best not to go cold turkey, advises nutritionist Patrick Holford, author of 'How to Quit Without Feeling S**t' (Piatkus, £16.99). ‘Set yourself reasonable targets based on halving your sugar intake each week until you have none. For example if you take two sugars in your tea, cut back to one for the first week and then half a teaspoon in the second and none in the third.'

Go halves Love baking? ‘With the exception of meringue, if you halved the amount of sugar in every single recipe you made, it would still work,' says dietician and food expert Michael Van Straten, author of new book 'Superfoods, Superjuices, Superhealth' (Mitchell Beazley, £16.99).

Swap smart There's no need to feel deprived. Swap mid-morning biscuits for a handful of almonds, suggests Charlotte Watts, as these are rich in nutrients such as magnesium and essential fatty acids that can help reduce cravings, along with a piece of fruit for natural sweetness. Dried mango and Brazil nuts are also a great combination of sweetness and essential nutrients.

Become a label detective Sugar is sugar - right? Not exactly, says Professor Aubrey Sheiham. ‘Sugar can be disguised on labels as things such as fructose, glucose, maltose or galatose. Basically anything ending in ‘ose‘ is just another name for sugar.' Other forms of sugar to look out for (and steer clear of) on labels include high fructose corn syrup, glucose syrup, brown rice syrup, dextrin, maldodextrin, mannitol, sorbitol, xylitol, fruit juice concentrate, molasses, polydextrose, raisin juice/syrup and microrystalline cellulose.

Harness your sweet tooth The secret is to try and cut back on foods that provide a sugary taste, in any form - that way, over time you retrain your palate not to crave sweetness. Remember, any strong, concentrated sweet taste can spike insulin - not just actual sugar - thus keeping blood sugar in flux, which is what makes us tired, moody and prone to cravings.

If you use artificial sweeteners, try and have them only occasionally and opt for natural varieties such as Stevia (a slow-releasing, Japanese sweetener made from herbs, from supermarkets) or Agave nectar (from the Agave cactus, from health food stores), as chemical versions such as saccharin have been linked, in trials on rodents, to increased cancer risk. Sweet-tasting fruits such as apples, berries, bananas and melons are great options as sweet craving fixers as the sugar and carbohydrate in them are slow-releasing.

Spice it up Certain spices, such as nutmeg, cloves, coriander, ginger and cayenne pepper can help regulate blood sugar. But the best of them is cinnamon. ‘Half a teaspoon a day of cinnamon, say sprinkled on porridge or yoghurt in the morning can really keep cravings at bay,' says nutritionist Charlotte Watts. ‘It contains a compound called mcg, which mimics the action of insulin and can also trick your body into thinking you've eaten something sweet when you haven't.'

Supplement help If you find yourself turning to sweets because of low mood, you may benefit from chromium supplements, says nutritionist Patrick Holford. ‘Chromium is a mineral which helps insulin to work and reduces sugar cravings,' he says. Studies have shown that within eight weeks of taking it, cravings are reduced by half and mood is improved. Patrick suggests taking 600mg a day.

Former NFL quarterback McNair killed in Tennessee

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Former NFL quarterback Steve McNair, who led the famous Tennessee Titans' drive that came a yard short of forcing overtime in the 2000 Super Bowl, was found dead Saturday with multiple gunshot wounds, including one to the head. Police said a pistol was discovered near the body of a woman also shot dead in a downtown condominium.

Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron identified the woman as 20-year-old Sahel Kazemi, whom he called a "friend" of McNair's. She had a single gunshot wound to the head.

Police said the 36-year-old McNair was found on the sofa in the living room, and Kazemi was very close to him on the floor. Aaron said the gun was not "readily apparent" when police first arrived.

Autopsies were planned for Sunday.

Aaron said McNair's wife, Mechelle, is "very distraught."

"At this juncture, we do not believe she is involved," he said. "Nothing has been ruled out, but as far as actively looking for a suspect tonight, the answer would be no."

Fred McNair, Steve McNair's oldest brother, said some family members likely will travel to Nashville on Monday to consult with Steve McNair's wife.

"It's still kind of hard to believe," Fred McNair said. "He was the greatest person in the world. He gave back to the community. He loved kids and he wanted to be a role model to kids."

He said he did not know who Kazemi was.

The bodies were discovered Saturday afternoon by McNair's longtime friend, Wayne Neeley, who said he rents the condo with McNair.

Aaron said Neeley told authorities he went into the condo, saw McNair on the sofa and Kazemi on the floor but walked first into the kitchen before going back into the living room, where he saw the blood.

Neeley then called a friend, who alerted authorities.

Police said a witness saw McNair arrive at the condo in the upscale Rutledge Hill neighborhood between 1:30 and 2 a.m. Saturday and that Kazemi's vehicle was already there. The condominium is located within walking distance of an area filled with restaurants and nightspots, a few blocks from the Cumberland River and within view of the Titans' stadium.

Two days ago, Nashville police arrested Kazemi on a DUI charge while driving a 2007 Escalade registered to her and McNair. McNair was in the front seat, but didn't break the law and was allowed to leave by taxi.

The arrest affidavit said Kazemi had bloodshot eyes and the smell of alcohol on her breath, but refused a breathalyzer test, saying "she was not drunk, she was high."

McNair and his family frequented the restaurant where Kazemi was a waitress, according employees and patrons of Dave & Buster's in Nashville. Keith Norfleet, Kazemi's ex-boyfriend, told The Tennessean newspaper that McNair and Kazemi met at the restaurant.

"She was reliable 90 percent of the time," manager Chris Truelove said of Kazemi. "She was pretty outgoing. A lot of the guests liked being around her, and she liked being around the guests."

Co-worker Shantez Jobe, 33, she said was friends with Kazemi.

"We talked about who had more fashion sense, and who was the cutest, and who could get more boys, you know some of the stuff girls do," Jobe said.

In June, McNair opened a restaurant near the Tennessee State University campus. It was closed Saturday evening, but had become a small memorial, where flowers, candles and notes had been placed outside the door.

On the restaurant's windows were messages: "We will miss you Steve" and "We love you Steve."

A note attached to a small blue teddy bear read, "We will never forget you, Steve. Once a Titan, always a Titan."

"We don't know the details, but it is a terrible tragedy and our hearts go out to the families involved," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement.

McNair, a four-time Pro Bowl selection, led the Titans to the 2000 Super Bowl, which they lost 23-16 to the St. Louis Rams. He was co-MVP of the NFL with Colts quarterback Peyton Manning in 2003. He also played for the Baltimore Ravens before retiring in April 2008.

His most notable moment came in that Super Bowl, when he led the Titans 87 yards in the final minute and 48 seconds, only to come up a yard short of making it a one-point game. Kevin Dyson caught his 9-yard pass, but was tackled at the 1-yard line by the Rams' Mike Jones. A made extra point in all likelihood would have sent the game to overtime.

McNair accounted for all of Tennessee's yards in that drive, throwing for 48 yards and rushing for 14. The rest of the yardage came on penalties against the Rams. Before that, he brought the Titans back from a 16-0 deficit to tie the game.

"If you were going to draw a football player, the physical part, the mental part, everything about being a professional, he is your guy," former Ravens and Titans teammate Samari Rolle said. "I can't even wrap my arms around it. It is a sad, sad day. The world lost a great man today."

McNair grew up in rural Mount Olive, Miss., and became a nationally known college football star playing for Alcorn State, a Division I-AA school in his home state. He was so dominant in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, he became a Heisman Trophy contender. National media flocked to little Lorman in the southwest corner of the Magnolia state to get a look at "Air McNair." He still holds the Division I-AA (now known as Football Championship Subdivision) records for career yards passing (14,496) and total offense (16,823).

McNair was the third overall draft pick in 1995 by the Houston Oilers, who eventually became the Titans. He finished his career with 31,304 yards passing and 174 touchdowns. McNair's rugged style led to numerous injuries and aches. He played with pain for several years, and the injuries ultimately forced him to retire.

"On the field, there isn't a player that was as tough as him, especially at the quarterback position," the Ravens' Derrick Mason said. "What I have seen him play through on the field, and what he dealt with during the week to get ready for a game, I have never known a better teammate."

During a five-game stretch at the end of the 2002 season, McNair was so bruised he couldn't practice. But he started all five games and won them, leading the Titans to an 11-5 record and a berth in the AFC championship game for the second time in four seasons.

McNair played all 16 games in 2006, his first season in Baltimore, and guided the Ravens to a 13-3 record. But he injured his groin during the season opener in 2007 and never regained the form that put him in those Pro Bowls.

"I am deeply saddened to learn of today's tragic news regarding the death of Steve McNair. He was a player who I admired a great deal," said New England Patriots senior football adviser Floyd Reese, who was GM of the Titans when McNair played for them. "He was a tremendous leader and an absolute warrior. He felt like it was his responsibility to lead by working hard every day, no matter what."

Titans coach Jeff Fisher was out of the country, taking part in the first NFL-USO coaches tour to Iraq.

Ozzie Newsome, Ravens executive vice president and general manager, said he immediately thought of McNair's four sons.

"This is so, so sad. We immediately think of his family, his boys. They are all in our thoughts and prayers," he said "What we admired most about Steve when we played against him was his competitive spirit, and we were lucky enough to have that with us for two years. He is one of the best players in the NFL over the last 20 years."

More than 1 million seek tix for Jackson memorial

www.uangsurga.com

LOS ANGELES – More than 1.2 million people have now registered to get tickets for Michael Jackson's memorial service next week.

Only 11,000 tickets will be given out for the Tuesday service at Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles. Another 6,500 tickets will be given away for the Nokia Theater overflow section next door.

The only way to get tickets is to register for free at staplescenter.com. After 6 p.m. Saturday, 8,750 names will be randomly selected to receive two tickets each.

Notifications will go out on Sunday.

City officials are preparing for massive crowds. Assistant Police Chief Earl Paysinger says anywhere from a quarter-million to 700,000 people may try to reach the arena, even though a wide area around Staples Center will be sealed off to those without tickets.

City Councilwoman Jan Perry strongly urged people to stay home and watch the memorial on TV. The ceremony will not be shown on Staples' giant outdoor TV screen and there will be no funeral procession through the city.

No details were given about the actual memorial events, which come as the nation's second-largest city struggles with a $530 million budget deficit. Perry said the cost of police protection for "extraordinary" events like the memorial is built into the Police Department's budget, but she still solicited help for "incremental costs."

Last month, donations covered about $850,000 of the city's $1 million cost for the Los Angeles Lakers' NBA championship parade. Critics had blasted the idea of using city money when it is considering layoffs to close its budget gap.

Woods takes command at Congressional

BETHESDA, Md. (AP)—Tiger Woods finished signing for the lowest 36-hole score ever at Congressional Country Club and was met by a couple of AT&T National officials wanting to know his plans for the afternoon.

“I’m done,” Woods said, indicating that he would not be going to the practice range.

The question is whether the 75 other players remaining at Congressional feel the same way.

Woods took a share of the lead with a 3-iron into the par-5 16th green for a two-putt birdie, kept his momentum by playing his five worst holes in 1 under, then finished off a 4-under 66 to build a one-shot lead going into the weekend.

He was at 10-under 130, breaking by one shot the 36-hole score set last year by Tom Pernice Jr. and Jeff Overton. And while he had only a one-shot lead over Rod Pampling (64) halfway through his tournament, history is on his side.

Woods has a 31-6 record on the PGA Tour when he has at least a share of the 36-hole lead, winning the last 11 times dating to the Byron Nelson Championship more than five years ago.

Rata Penuh

Pampling has been around Woods enough not to lose sleep over this. The scrappy Australian has played numerous practice rounds at dawn in the majors with Woods, so nothing surprises him.

“He can be playing great and then you really don’t have a lot of chance of beating him,” Pampling said. “And then he’s just playing so-so and he’s still right there with a chance to win coming down the last nine holes. He’s just amazing how consistent he is.”

On the other end of the spectrum was Anthony Kim.

He couldn’t get to the range fast enough.

Kim opened this tournament with a course-record 62, and with a couple of birdies early in the second round Friday afternoon, he caught Woods atop the leaderboard at 10 under.

But it wasn’t long before Kim started missing fairways, missing greens, missing putts. He slowly fell back, needing a hard-earned birdie on the 16th and a 5-footer for par on his final hole to salvage a 70 that put him alone in third.

“I hate the way I hit the ball today,” he said. “Obviously, I didn’t drive it the way I wanted to and like I did yesterday. So it was a rough day, but I’m glad I got through it, and now I have to go work on it and see what I can figure out.”

Jim Furyk had a 67 and was alone in fourth, while U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover ran off four straight birdies on his way to a 66 that helped him get back into the hunt at 5-under 135.

Woods couldn’t figure out his swing for a short spell in the second round.

That’s when he was at his best.

After tying for the lead with that two-putt birdie at the 16th, this is a snapshot of his next five holes, when he could have easily slipped back into the pack chasing Kim.

He twice hit into the rough and was unable to reach the green. Another tee shot rode the wind into a fairway bunker. He pulled his tee shot on the par-3 second hole on the side of a mound, the wrong side of the pin to miss. And from the middle of the fairway, he came down too steep and sailed his shot to the right, into a hollow of rough.

Woods played those holes in 1-under par.

He steadied himself with pars until hitting a soft sand wedge that skipped to a stop about 2 feet from the hole at No. 8 for one last birdie, and was off to the start he wanted as the “greedy host.”

Jim Furyk tees off on the fourth hole during the second round of the AT&T National golf tournament at Congressional Country Club, Friday, July 3, 2009, in Bethesda, Md.
Jim Furyk tees off on the four…
AP - Jul 3, 6:38 pm EDT

“That’s why the guy is at such a high level,” Glover said after playing two days with Woods. “When things are going bad, he can rely on his short game. He just doesn’t waste any shots. If he’s losing shots, it’s because of a bad break or a bad lie.”

Despite the five birdies, Woods recognized that five-hole stretch as the key to his round.

“That’s how you keep yourself in a golf tournament,” Woods said. “I made a couple of big putts—17, 18, good up-and-down on 2—and it kept me going. I played well early, and it’s all about keeping your momentum.”

He can only hope the momentum carries into the weekend, where Woods will have a chance to win for the third time this year and move atop the FedEx Cup standings for the first time this season.

This is his final tuneup before the British Open, and Woods won his previous two tournaments before majors, at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Memorial, hosted by Jack Nicklaus.

It would be a peculiar hat trick if he were to win all three PGA Tour events where the host is a player—in this case, himself.

Our two-week healthy eating shape-up plan is based on the principles of nutritionist and cellulite reduction specialist Georgios Tzenichristos, who has a clinic in London. An expert in his field, Georgios is consulted daily by women who are fed up with following standard diet plans that leave them feeling hungry and sluggish - and looking even worse than when they started!

'Many traditional diets starve your body of nutrients,' explains Georgios. 'This leaves you with loose, lacklustre skin, a lower metabolism, poor circulation and more toxins in your system than you had before you started dieting. In fact, over time, a low-nutrient diet can actually create the flabby, puffy, cellulite-ridden look that most women are so desperate to be rid of.' Worse still, as soon as you stop starving yourself, your body grabs hold of the calories and locks them into fat faster than ever before. So ultimately, many diets can make you gain weight!

Because of this, Georgios suggests that his clients follow the simple principle of controlling their nutrient/calorie ratio - also known as ‘low-energy density eating'. The idea behind this is that the foods you eat should be as high in nutrients and low in calories per portion as possible. 'Most of the meals we eat are completely the opposite of this,' adds Georgios. 'Take something simple like a white bread cheese sandwich - it's packed with calories, yet it provides your body with virtually none of the nutrients you need.' It also supplies none of the ingredients that will help you to stay slim. Weight loss is often regarded as a simple matter of calories in versus calories out, but the truth is that the more nutrient-dense your eating plan, the more effective it will be.

This is partly down to appetite - if you consume high-nutrient/low-calorie foods you can, quite simply, eat more and still lose weight. Many nutrition experts also believe that if your body is receiving all the nutrients it needs, it's far less likely to produce the cravings and hunger pangs associated with a high-carb, high-sugar diet. In fact, in trials at the US's Penn State University, women swapping to a low-energy density diet cut roughly 800 calories a day from their normal food intake without even noticing, because their bodies felt so satisfied.

What's more, diets that are low in nutrients trigger a metabolic slow down that can affect your body's slimming potential. 'If you don't take in enough nutrients, your liver will under perform, your kidneys and lymph system will slow down and you will synthesise less collagen,' explains Georgios. 'All of this can have a negative effect on your shape. The liver, for example, is the biggest fat-burning organ in the body. And if your kidneys and lymph system are sluggish, you're going to get fluid retention, which will add flab, pounds and inches.' And that's not all. 'If collagen levels fall, you'll start to look flabbier and less toned - poor collagen is one of the major contributory factors to the formation of cellulite.'

The good news? By adjusting your nutrient/calorie ratio you can change all of this in one fell swoop. According to Georgios, you're likely to lose up to half a stone in the first fortnight - and if you follow the plan for longer you'll then settle down to a weight loss of a safe and healthy 1-2lb a week. In fact, in trials at Penn State University, people who went on a nutrient-rich, low-calorie diet were found to lose 6lb more than those following a diet focused solely on reducing fat and calories. And since you'll be supplying your body with huge levels of nutrients, you'll look and feel fantastic too! In fact, Georgios is so proud of the results of his eating plan that he has nicknamed it the ‘Lipo Diet', because it's more effective than surgery!

The four rules

1 Fill two-thirds of your plate with vegetables - the ultimate high-nutrient, low-calorie foods. Go for dark green leafy veg, which has a huge nutrient/calorie ratio, or sea vegetables such as wakame or nori seaweed (www.goodnessdirect.co.uk).

2 Protein and/or ‘good' carbs, such as brown rice, pasta, sweet potatoes and wholegrain bread and crackers should take up the other third of the plate - but only eat carbs if you've exercised that day. Try to include small portions of fish or lean meat wherever possible as protein helps the body retain muscle mass, which increases the number of calories you burn.

3 Add a dash of healthy fat. Essential fatty acids from oily fish, nuts, seeds, avocados or olives help your body to burn fat. Georgios suggests adding a teaspoon or two of fat, such as flaxseed oil, to meals.

4 Have a smoothie for breakfast, so you start the day on a nutrient high. Georgios recommends adding some whey protein to stimulate calorie burning.

Tone-up tips for your problem areas

www.uangsurga.com

Whether it’s our stomach, arms or thighs, we all have bits of our body we long to change. So what can you do about those problem areas? By Anne Montague

Just because you've inherited a particular body shape doesn't mean you can't have a flat tummy, toned arms or a pert bottom; you might just have to work a bit harder to achieve it, says Carl McCartney, national group exercise manager for Virgin Active.

‘Strength training to build muscle is a key part of that, especially when you're trying to tone a particular area. A pound of muscle is more compact than a pound of fat so if you lose fat and gain muscle you might not lose weight, but you should lose inches from the bits that matter and look more toned. The more muscle you have, the higher your metabolic rate and the more calories you will burn.'

A pound of fat burns 8 calories a day, while a pound of muscle burns 75 - build 4½lb muscle and you can boost your metabolic rate by 10%. Combining strength training with aerobic exercise like walking, swimming or dancing will help you stay fit and feel more comfortable with your body as well as burning fat, especially from around your tummy. Carl McCartney recommends these toning exercises every other day:

Reshape a big bottom
Squats are one of the best exercises for your hips, bottom and thighs. Stand with your feet shoulder-width distance apart, toes pointing slightly outwards, and squat as though you were sitting into or standing out of a chair. Your knees should not extend beyond the line of your toes. Do 10-15 squats every other day. Raise the intensity by slowing down and holding the squat for 2 to 3 seconds.

Tone your thighs
Lunges are great for total leg conditioning and will work all the muscles from your hips down to your ankles. Stand with your feet hip distance apart and lunge forward, heel first, lowering your body until your front knee is at 90 degrees and directly over your foot - your knee shouldn't extend beyond your toes. Your back knee should be as close to the ground as you can manage. Return to your starting position and do the same move with the other leg. Aim for 12-15 lunges on each leg. You can make your legs work harder and exercise your abdominals at the same time by adding some weight - hold a can of beans or a heavy bag in the hand on the same side as the back leg. Your abdominal and core muscles will have to work to stabilise your body.

Flatten your stomach
Crunches are the most effective way to tighten your tummy muscles. Lie on your back, feet flat on the floor, hip distance apart, and knees bent. Cross your arms over your chest, placing each hand on the opposite shoulder. Tuck your chin toward your chest and gently raise your shoulders off the floor until you feel a squeeze in your tummy muscles, then slowly lower your shoulders back towards the floor. Repeat 15-20 times.

Slim your waist
Side bends and rotations will strengthen the oblique muscles around your middle, making your waist look narrower, but they won't shift a spare tyre - you have to eat less and do more aerobic exercise to achieve that.
Bends: stand with your knees slightly bent, arms down by your sides and hips facing forward. Bend down to one side, sliding your arm down the side of your leg, and then the other. Do 15 bends on each side. Your hips should stay still - imagine them as headlights that have to stay facing forward.
Rotations: stand with your knees slightly bent, hips facing forward and your arms at shoulder level and bent at 90 degrees at the elbow. Rotate slowly to the right, keeping your hips still (think headlights again) and then to the left. Repeat 15 times on each side.

Banish bingo wings
Sit on the edge of a chair or the bottom step of the stairs and move your feet out in front of you. Balancing on your arms, move your bottom in front of the chair/step. Bend your elbows and lower your body a few inches, keeping your shoulders down and away from your ears and your elbows parallel to one another, going no lower than 90 degrees. Push back up to your starting position. Repeat 12-15 times. If you want to make it harder, straighten your legs.

Stop saggy boobs
Although you can't tone breasts as they have no muscles, toning up your chest muscles will add stability and help firm up the whole area. Push-ups will work your chest and your arms. Kneel on the floor with your arms straight and your palms flat on the floor. Keep your back straight and aim for 5-10 push-ups. If that's too much like hard work, just stretching your chest will give your whole chest area a physical lift by pushing it out and improving your posture. Stand with your feet hip width apart and your arms stretched out straight at shoulder level. Push your arms back, thumbs turned backwards and your chest out, and hold for a count of 10.

If ugly, dimpled thighs are putting a damper on your summer, our 14-day plan could solve all your problems. Helen Foster, renowned diet expert, reveals how to get smooth legs and lose up to 7lb!

‘No matter what beauty therapists might tell you, cellulite isn't a build-up of toxins, it's actually fat held in stacked lipid boxes - pure and simple. If you gain weight or the collagen fibres holding those boxes together start to thicken, the fat is squished upwards, creating a dimpled look. And as this fat has high numbers of water-attracting cells, fluid is drawn into those boxes, leading to more lumps. So the severity of your cellulite depends on: how much fat and fluid your lipid boxes contain; how thick the collagen fibres become and how firm your skin is. All of these factors are influenced by genetics, age and the number of free radicals in your system - but they can be radically improved by the foods you eat. ‘Your diet alone can determine whether you have cellulite,' says nutritional therapist and homotoxicologist Karen Devine (www.nutritionalenergy.co.uk). So follow our four rules and banish the bumps.

Four rules for smooth skin

1 Reduce fluid retention

This is the most important rule, as eliminating excess fluid from your fat cells will dramatically reduce the amount bulging from those stacked lipid boxes. So you need to cut out salt, drink more water and eat more naturally diuretic foods, including cranberries, celery, fennel and asparagus.

2 Burn fat

While slim women do get cellulite, excess fat makes the condition far worse, so this diet plan gives around 1,400 calories a day, on which you should lose about 2lb of fat a week. ‘To maximise fat burning, it's vital to increase your intake of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which triggers fat release,' reveals nutritionist Henrietta Bailey of London's Pure Sports Medicine (www.puresportsmed.com). In fact, when US researchers gave one group of women a herbal anti-cellulite pill alone and another group the same pill plus 800mg CLA, the CLA group lost two-thirds more fat from their thighs and were five times more likely to say their cellulite had improved. Try the Maximuscle Diet System CLA 1000, £29.99, Boots.

3 Plump your skin

‘Cellulite looks worse on dehydrated skin,' says Henrietta. This is because the more water there is in your skin cells, the plumper the skin will be over the fat boxes and the less the dimpling will show. Healthy fats hydrate the skin because they encourage fluid to remain inside the skin cells rather than in the fat cells. So nuts, seeds, olives and oily fish are important elements of this plan.

4 Decrease oestrogen levels

‘The women of Peru don't have cellulite, which, I believe, is down to the fact that they have a diet high in natural phytoestrogens (plant oestrogens), which balances their oestrogen levels,' says New York-based cellulite specialist Dr Lionel Bissoon, author of 'The Cellulite Cure' (Meso Press, £21.50). Oestrogen is involved in cellulite production as it triggers the production of fat cells and encourages fluid retention. In fact, according to Karen Devine. ‘One of the most important cellulite-fighting foods is flaxseed, which contains hormone modulators called lignans, which lower excess oestrogen levels.' Just sprinkle one to two tablespoons of flaxseed (also known as linseed) over your morning cereal or porridge. Try Cold Milled Flaxseeds, £9.99 for 425g, from Holland & Barrett. Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and Brussels sprouts also contain mild phytoestrogens.

If you follow these rules it will help in the fight against cellulite, but how do you incorporate them all into your life? Easy - our seven-day diet does it all for you. Follow it for two weeks to visibly improve surface cellulite and tackle fluid retention, and for up to six weeks to create a longer-lasting effect that targets the problem at the source. Not only that, you'll also be really re-energised on this plan. Feel free to mix and match the ingredients - for example, if the diet suggests salmon, it's okay to swap it for another oily fish. Just make sure you stick to the same quantities. Each day, drink two litres of low- or no-calorie fluid such as water, diet soda or herbal tea. If you suffer from fluid retention, have one or two cups of dandelion or fennel tea a day to help flush out fluid faster.

Best golf courses for women

Bogey, mulligan and slice included

Golf isn't just for men anymore; 25 percent of all golfers across the country are women. And now, more than ever, golf course managers are catering to both sexes. In honor of summer golf season, we’ve outlined our favorite female-friendly courses from coast to coast.

Woman Golfer

Reynolds Plantation -- Greensboro, Georgia

This historical community has six courses, all perfectly landscaped and bordered by stunning views of nearby Lake Oconee. One of the most popular is the Great Waters Course. Open for nearly two decades, it has played host to a number of professional events including the 2008 PGA Professional Championship. Another one of our faves is the Plantation Course, designed by two former PGAers.
For more information, visit: www.reynoldsplantation.com

Golden Bear Golf Club at Indigo Run -- Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

This much-buzzed-about course is punishing but not without fun. Jack Nicklaus designed the award-winning course himself. What’s more, because the course is built to favor strategy and skill over power, women can keep up with (and even kick the butts of) the men they play with.
For more information, visit: www.clubcorp.com

Kierland Golf Club -- Scottsdale, Arizona

When you have a husband-and-wife set of golf pros on staff (Mike LaBauve, a class A member of the PGA, and Sandy LaBauve, an award-winning Class A member of both the PGA and LPGA), clearly you mean business in making golf male and female friendly. The nine-hole course is great for beginner golfers, and it’s challenging enough for pros who are looking to boost their games.

Torrey Pines Golf Course -- San Diego, California

Set to host the 2009 Samsung LPGA World Championship, this sprawling two-course club is bound by lush, jaw-dropping landscapes (with mountains to the north and the ocean to the west). And it’s quite common to catch even the most avid golfer stopping to spot some of California's nearby wildlife. We love the recently revamped South Course, with its 7,607 yards and rolling hills (which are challenging but fun).

World Woods Golf Club -- Brooksville, Florida

Packed with courses, from two world-class championship ranges -- Pine Barrens and Rolling Oaks -- to a nine-hole short course (perfect for practicing), World Woods frequently has been rated a favorite by female golfers for its lush landscape and smooth-golfing terrain. It’s also a great place to buff up your skills.
